Wind-driven waves, the high wakes caused by the growing popularity of wakesurfing*, and seasonal changes in water levels can all quickly erode shorelines and threaten property. DRS offers an all-natural and cost-effective solution: coir logs. These 12' x 1' logs, made of densely-packed coconut fibers bound together with a coconut fiber net, provide a firm physical barrier between vulnerable shorelines and high waves while still allowing water to seep through. DRS can place coir logs along your entire bank to provide a continuous physical barrier while natural vegetation becomes re-established. (Fun fact: the growth of natural vegetation discourages Canada Geese, who fear hidden predators!)
All-natural: no chemical seepage that damages micro-organisms and no ugly plastic netting left behind that entangles wildlife
Biodegradable: as the logs naturally break down over 3-5 years, they continue to maintain their erosion-control properties; even the wooden support stakes will break down. They do not need to be removed.
Encourage vegetation growth: as the logs slowly decay, they contribute nutrients to the soil (especially potassium and phosphorus) and provide a substrate for plant growth. The logs themselves can be directly seeded or planted into, and they protect native and newly-installed plants growing on the shoreline
Soft armoring: coir logs are far gentler than rocks (or other forms of hard shoreline armoring) on bare feet and on boats, which reduces possible injuries and property damage
*Studies show that wakesurfing boats that operate less than 400 feet from inland shorelines can be a significant cause of erosion. As wakesurfing becomes more popular, the frequency of higher waves hitting the shoreline also increases. Until local or state organizations develop regulations to limit the negative effects of wakesurfing, DRS strongly recommends the installation of coir logs to improve shoreline health and residents' peace of mind.
