To restore dune areas that are eroded from wind ("blowouts"), water ("washouts"), or human use, DRS brings sand from a local quarry (we don't raid the lakefront ) and replace it using a variety of methods. Which method we use depends on safety issues, the amount of sand that is needed, weather/wave conditions, and accessibility for equipment.

When Lake Michigan water levels were high, many property owners installed rock revetments, steel seawalls, or geo-textile bags. The toe of the dune was protected from erosive wave action, but the dune no longer looks natural. Therefore, to restore a natural appearance, DRS can bring quarried sand to cover those structures.

In either situation, we strongly recommend installing a protective, biodegradable matting over the new sand to shield it from wind and water erosion and to encourage plant growth.
