Custom Beach Access Below a Pool Patio

The DRS Solution 

DRS designed concrete floating steps supported by a stainless-steel monorail and bordered by a glass railing system that echoes the pool patio above. Working with specialized fabrication partners, we coordinated the production of the custom components and carefully lifted them over the patio’s existing glass railings for installation without damaging the finished space.

At the base of the floating steps, DRS constructed a stair system using Deckorator Voyager (color Tundra) PVC decking  in a picture-frame style for each platform and stair step.  We surrounded the stairs with white aluminum Deckorator cable railings to maximize safety while minimizing barriers to the stunning lake view.  Near the shoreline, removable aluminum stairs provide convenient beach access throughout the warmer months. Each fall, DRS removes these stair sections to protect them from winter waves, ice, shifting sand, and storm damage; we reinstall them after the lake ice clears in the spring.

The completed system creates a cohesive transition from the pool patio to the beach while combining high-end materials with practical protection from Lake Michigan’s seasonal conditions.
